the problem

Everyone knows that good comedy is all about timing.

In the age of technology, memes are one of the most popular ways to share a laugh with friends.

But finding the right meme to send at the right time in a conversation can be a real pain. With so many different platforms used to share content and so many accounts made private, screenshots have become essential to meme sharing.

But who really wants to scroll through thousands of pictures just to find a meme they saw a week or two ago?

By the time you’ve found it—if you even saved it—the joke’s over and the opportunity’s passed.

There’s just no easy way to store and organize your memes!

That is, until now…

1 discover

Using a screener survey, the team identified interview candidates we thought would best define our problem space. It was revealed that 92% of respondents share memes regularly. From that pool, candidates were selected and interviewed extensively.

Using Affinity Mapping to reveal trends, the team identified 5 primary needs:

  1. Users need a better way of saving memes

  2. Users need a better way of sharing memes

  3. Users need a better way of organizing meme

  4. Users want to be able to discover new memes

  5. Users want to be able to find specific memes

Market Analysis

Competitive Matrix

In order to better identify the area of opportunity, the team constructed a competitive matrix.

The matrix further confirmed that Memebox would occupy a unique problem space amongst competitors and comparators.

2 define

The team used the insights gleaned from our interviews to craft a persona representing the typical Memebox user. This persona would later be used to guide our design process. Meet Jim:

Jim’s Journey Map

Problem Statement

When people save memes on their phones, they don’t take the time to organize them.

Jim has trouble finding memes because his camera roll is unorganized.

How might we help Jim organize his memes in a way that allows him to share them instantaneously?

3 design

Once our research was complete, we set about prioritizing those features we felt were essential to include in our final product.

Using the MoSCoW Method, the team categorized features in terms of the impact they would have on the user’s experience as well as the effort required for their implementation.

Based on the needs identified in our research, our team looked to include:

With these features in place, we looked to create a product that would effectively and efficiently satisfy all meme-related needs our users had expressed.

Usability Test Results

InfoGraphics.png

Our usability tests revealed that the swipe feature on the Discover Page was somewhat confusing to users. Despite a modal explaining the function, some users struggled to understand how the feature worked once they arrived on the page.

More comprehensive onboarding screens were added after testing to better explain the functionality of the Discover Page. Additionally, save/delete buttons were added to provide alternatives to swiping.

These features have yet to be tested.

Next Steps

􀆿.png

Microinteractions

In order to make the app a more delightful experience for users, we would look to add microinteractions. These microinteractions would aid in providing system feedback during user interactions, such as swiping to save/delete memes and sending memes.

Keyboard Plug-in

Sharing memes should be quick, easy and fun. To simplify this process, we would look to build and test a keyboard plug-in that allows users to search for and send memes without ever having to leave their messaging platform.

Link Social Media

By linking with various social media platforms, users will be able to save memes directly to Memebox. The partnership would also benefit these platforms by providing even more content and, for platforms like Facebook, increased user interaction from a younger audience.
